Promotional Video Brief: From Business Message to Clear Story

A promotional video needs a clear message before it needs a camera. When the brief tries to include every company achievement, product detail, and slogan, the story becomes difficult to follow. A focused brief gives the production team something concrete to build.

Define the audience and action

Specify who will watch and where they are in the buying journey. A first introduction, a product demonstration, and a campaign landing-page video have different information needs.

Choose the action the video should support: understanding a service, comparing an option, requesting information, or exploring a product. This gives the script a useful direction.

Write the core message in one sentence

State what you offer and why it matters to the audience. Keep the wording concrete. “We help service businesses explain their offer with a clear website” is easier to develop into a story than “we transform the future.”

Use a simple story structure

Introduce the relevant problem, show the approach, explain the offer, and provide a next step. Include genuine evidence where it strengthens the explanation. Do not invent client results to make the story more dramatic.

For a hypothetical product video, this might mean showing the situation where the product is useful, demonstrating its operation, and explaining which option to choose.

Plan footage and approvals

List the people, locations, products, recordings, and graphics needed. Confirm permissions for anything shown. Identify who checks the script, rough edit, and final version so the team does not receive conflicting instructions late in production.

  • What must be shown rather than described?
  • Which statements need factual approval?
  • What versions are needed for different placements?
  • Will the video need captions or translations?
  • Who approves the final call to action?

Review the video as part of the journey

Check that the destination page and sales conversation match the video’s offer. Preview the edit in its intended context and remove information that distracts from the main message.

OrbisRank’s promotional video and video editing services help connect planning, production assets, and a clear final story.
