WordPress Website Planning: A Practical Checklist Before Development

A WordPress project runs more smoothly when the important decisions happen before development begins. A theme provides a starting layout, but your business still needs a clear page structure, useful content, and a workable maintenance process.

Define the action visitors should take

Decide whether the website should generate enquiries, accept bookings, sell products, or explain a specialist service. List secondary goals separately. A brochure site and a booking platform have different requirements, even when their homepages look similar.

Write a short description of the audience, the problem you solve, and what a useful enquiry looks like. Use this as a reference for page copy, navigation, and calls to action.

Map the pages and prepare real content

Start with your homepage, About page, individual services, contact information, and relevant examples or resources. Give each service a distinct purpose. Collect approved logos, photographs, testimonials, and business information before layouts are finalised.

A practical page brief includes a heading, the questions it needs to answer, supporting evidence, and a desired next step. Identify gaps early so the project does not launch with placeholder text.

Explain how the team will use the site

Tell your developer who will edit pages and how often. Describe forms, booking tools, payments, email integrations, and language requirements. Ask for a demonstration using changes your team will actually make.

  • Who approves content before publication?
  • Where should form submissions go?
  • Who owns domain, hosting, and administrator access?
  • What is the backup and maintenance arrangement?

Agree on launch checks

Test navigation, forms, confirmation emails, and error messages on desktop and mobile. Review titles and links. Remove temporary content and make sure the team knows how to request support. When replacing an existing site, document old URLs and plan how visitors will reach their new equivalents.

Plan beyond launch day

Schedule updates, content reviews, and routine testing. Keep a record of account ownership and important integrations so support does not depend on one person’s memory. OrbisRank’s WordPress development and website maintenance services support both the initial build and the work that follows.
